Radon Gas Remediation Enel Power Plant in Mormanno
Design and implementation of remediation interventions at the plant in Località Pantano, Cosenza.
The Preliminary Investigation and Gas Dynamics
Evaluation of the radon problem and the intervention by Misurazione Radon and Hattusas Srl.
Detection and Endoscopic Analysis
The investigations carried out during the remediation interventions consisted of a preliminary detection, using an endoscopic camera, of the existing crawl space pipes, wall cavities, and underfloor.
Subsequently, with continuous active instrumentation (Tecnavia® Radon Mapper and Sarad® Radon Scout monitors), radon gas concentrations were measured, with particular reference to underfloor flows.
Radon Entry Dynamics
Radon spreads indoors due to the pressure difference between buildings and the ground. Warm air rising creates a slight depression in basements generating the so-called chimney effect.
Client: ENEL Green Power
Assignment entrusted to the technicians of Misurazione Radon and Hattusas SrL to design and implement the necessary interventions for the power plant's radon gas remediation.
Preventive Measures and Area Criticalities
As a preventive measure, the client autonomously carried out several measurements using active dosimetry such as Canary® and through the periodic placement of passive track dosimeters in the rooms. The analyses revealed very significant radon gas values, especially in the stairwell area corresponding to the utility panel.

The in-depth instrumental survey then covered the entire building, taking place in different phases and times. These times were functional to the delicate operations of setting up the provisional ventilation systems necessary to buffer and subsequently permanently resolve the complex criticality of the plant.


Remediation Experimentation
The radon gas remediation became a true engineering design to minimize the dispersion of flows from the raised floor rooms to the outside.
Creation of Extraction Points
The radon gas remediation campaign was conducted through the targeted installation of 3 perimeter ventilation presidiums along the building, which surgically reached the structure's subfloor, located below the floor level.
Furthermore, 1 barycentric ventilation presidium with respect to the building's geometry was added to increase the negative pressure differential in the inner ground.
Physical Anti-Gas Barrier (Sealing)
With the fundamental assistance of the workers involved, systematic sealing of structural joints and passages through the slab thickness was carried out using special construction polyurethane foams, even sealing the specific underground inspection pits for utilities.
System Testing and Validation
The implemented interventions and the instrumental monitoring tested in the months following the work led to the complete resolution of the radiological problem and the full success of the remediation procedure for the plant as a whole.
